When someone shares an idea, just say 'yes, and' then build on their idea. The simple act of instead replaying someone's idea (whether adding a positive or negative note) and finishing with 'but' means you're killing the idea and that person's confidence.
Why?
Recognising someone's idea shows you care. It helps drive inclusion, trust and better ideas by encouraging people to remain open to other ideas and perspectives. It's a win win for everyone.
You know it’s working when:
You catch yourself before saying ‘but’ and instead say ‘yes, and’
You hear others saying ‘but’ and step in to correct
You (and others) feel more confident raising/building on ideas
